Lorne Coe questions the Premier on claims of ‘free tuition’
QUEEN’S PARK – Today, during question period, Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby-Oshawa, called on the Premier to explain her backpedaling on her government’s initial post budget claims of free tuition for many university students in the province.
“The Premier says she’s worried about her ‘free tuition’ plan. In fact, the Premier now claims it is ‘free with some explanation required’” said Mr. Coe. The Liberal government announced in its recent budget that it was eliminating current programs and creating an Ontario Student Grant as a replacement, which would pay for average college or university tuition for students from families with incomes of $50,000 or less. But the Premier was forced to state, when pressed, that the language surrounding the new grant process needed some work and ‘will evolve’.
Mr. Coe pointed out how the Premier had no difficulty calling it free tuition on March 1st. “Only when students looked at the fine print did the Premier add her asterisk” he added.
In a follow-up, Mr. Coe went on to say “Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, the Liberals are taking away $165 million dollars worth of tax credits from students.”
He concluded by asking the Premier for an admission that the tuition plan wasn’t about helping students but was “about distracting from her scandal, waste and mismanagement.”
