MPP Lorne Coe Hosts Senior Information Session Focusing on Safety and Community Connection in Whitby

WHITBY – On Friday September 27th, Whitby MPP Lorne Coe hosted a Seniors Information Session at Durham Christian Homes, focusing on transportation, financial abuse, and safety for seniors. This engaging event brought together residents from Durham Christian Homes to connect with local organizations committed to enhancing their quality of life.

MPP Coe introduced a distinguished panel of topic experts, including representatives from the Durham Regional Police Service’s Elder Abuse and Fraud Prevention Unit, the Regional Municipality of Durham’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Division, Durham Regional Transit, the Abilities Centre, Community Care Durham, and the Alzheimer Society of the Durham Region. Together, these organizations provided invaluable insights into various seniors’ initiatives supported by the Ontario government, as well as the Region of Durham.

In his opening remarks, MPP Coe said “As we age, many of us face unique challenges, from physical health issues to the threat of fraud and abuse”, he said. “It’s our responsibility to ensure older adults in Whitby and the Durham Region have the tools and information they need to protect themselves”.

This year, the Ontario Government has allocated 305 Seniors Community Grants to assist communities throughout the Province, equalling nearly $22 million. While also addressing social isolation and combating ageism, these initiatives have played a critical role in maintaining the health, fitness, and social connections of seniors. These investments have provided funding to 1,249 community-based initiatives since 2018.
